Mr Michael Carter

BDent (Hons) MBBS BHsc FRACDS (OMS) Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon

Michael is an Australian trained Oral & Maxillofacial Surgeon. Though he completed his surgical training in Melbourne, he remains a country boy from the Southern Highlands region of NSW.

Michael has completed surgical Fellowships in complex facial trauma, head and neck tumour resection and cleft surgery. Michael provides a very broad scope of practice to WestOMS. Even when undertaking the tough cases, Michael is always calm, relaxed and in control which is impressive considering how much coffee he consumes.

Michael gives a lot of time to the public health and is heavily involved in training young surgeons. He holds appointments at Western Health, Geelong Hospital and the Royal Dental Hospital. He has a passion for facial trauma and is always sought out by the registrars to manage the most difficult cases.

When he isn’t at WestOMS headquarters, Michael can usually be found with a coffee in hand taking his young daughter for a stroll. He loves rugby and is happiest when he finds a fellow supporter of the Wallabies.

Wisdom Teeth Removal

Wisdom Teeth Removal

When it comes to caring for your wisdom teeth, you must find an experienced surgeon that you can trust.

Research has proven that surgeon inexperience is associated with increased pain, longer procedures, more time off work and more complications following extraction.

Our surgeons at WestOMS are Australian trained specialists in Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery. Our surgical team routinely manage the most difficult wisdom teeth carefully, swiftly, and with minimum fuss. We also understand that not all wisdom teeth require extraction. It takes many years of experience to determine what options are safe and sensible for each patient.

Corrective Jaw Surgery

Corrective Jaw Surgery

It is very common for patients to present with a discrepancy between the position of their top and lower jaws.

Ideally, the mandible (lower jaw) and maxilla (top jaw) should be of proportionate dimensions, creating an aesthetic appearance and allowing the teeth to come together in a functional bite.

Sometimes one jaw may be too big, too small or too narrow relative to the other. Occasionally there may be other issues, such as an asymmetry or deviation of the jaws or chin to one side. Orthognathic surgery, also known as corrective jaw surgery, refers to surgical procedures which correct these skeletal relationships, thereby improving patient function and aesthetics.

Dental Implants

Dental Implants

The placement of dental implants to restore missing teeth is a core skill in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Dental implants can be an excellent solution for missing teeth, but are not appropriate in every situation. It takes many years of experience to recognise when to proceed with implants, or when to put your time and money towards other options.

Finding the best solution for each patient involves careful assessment with the latest in digital planning technologies. The best plan is not always the most complex or expensive, and sometimes a simple approach is the most elegant and effective.
